Hamilton Remix Project

Reimagining a classic Hamilton scene with modern flair

Influencer Refuted:

The scene we chose to remix was Farmer Refuted. The original scene covered numerous topics related to The American Revolution, our updated script retains those topics but modernizes the language by making Samuel Seabury an influencer, utilizing references to modern topics, through an updated wardrobe, and more.

Concept Overview

Script Evidence

Lines from the original Farmer Refuted and why they inspired us: (Hamilton in green, Seabury in blue)

1. "Hear ye! Hear ye! My name is Samuel Seabury", this first line from the original was the most essential part towards deciding our overall topic, we thought about how we could introduce Samuel Seabury in a more modern way and we eventually landed on making him an influencer and having him address his followers.

2. "Yo, He'd have you all unravel at the sound of screams, Heed not the rabble who scream Revolution, But the Revolution is comin'" Hamilton's first response to Seabury as they overlap in speech; this moment was important as it establishes Hamilton's stance and how he will refute Seabury: We took this moment and designed our version of Hamilton to make fun of Seabury's influencer persona.

3. "I pray the king shows you his mercy, is he in Jersey?" One of the more humorous parts of the original, we wanted to make sure the humor was not lost in the transition to a more modern form; we took it and instead of having Hamilton ask about the King's physical presence, he instead inquires about his online status.

History Check

Accurate Elements:

  • We retained the debate over the Revolution-- taxes, unnecessary violence-- that is mentioned in the original.

  • Seabury is still an English loyalist in our version.

Dramatized Elements:

  • Hamilton and Seabury are converted into influencers with opposing views.

  • Numerous references to modern technology and topics are made, i.e., I pads, Instagram, and more.

  • Modern clothing is worn by actors instead of the older clothing in the original.

The elements that we retained still portray the main idea behind Farmer Refuted, but our modern spins on other elements bring it into the 21st century and helps it to be humorous as it relates to modern day problems.

Hamilton
Seabury

Hamilton's costume design is based on the way he is presented throughout the musical. We've converted his older style into 21st century business casual attire.

Seabury's clothing is in line with typical 21st century business casual attire. He wears a black stoll as a reference to Seabury (as seen in the reference image).

Video

An Instagram user opens their app to find a live stream of two men debating.

Scenic Description

The scene is happening at a debate table with 2 influencers arguing face to face on a livestream with their laptops open. We see numerous other characters that are reacting to the live streams of the two influencers; these side characters are either at their homes or even within FIU classes and they are watching on their own laptops, desktops, or handhelds.
